The American Flintlock Pistol
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:52:29 PM »
Has anyone purchased this pistol from Jim Chambers Flintlocks? If so does it come in kit form or is it a finished pistol?

Do you know anyone in the forum that could finish it if I decided to purchase it?

Captchee, I would not need it anytime soon, just would like for it to be done nicely which I am sure you can do a good job.

CJ, don't your dare let Captchee "small talk" you with his humble assessment of "it can be done".
He's not one to pat himself on the back, but I have been seeing his work for years now and, as Riley said, "you'd be hard pressed to find one to do a better job" and that's not just hearsay, that's first hand knowledge!

If he offers to do it it's only because he has bit of slack-time, he'll do it and make you right proud, at a price you can afford...he's definitely a stand up guy!

Sorry Cap, I know, along with many others, how humble you can be at times, but your work needs and rightly deserves recognition and I'll stand up for ya any ol' time, against any ol' body that builds these stinking ol' smoke poles!

There! It's been said!

Uncle Russ...
It's the many things we don't do that totally sets us apart.

Uncle Russ,
That being said, there is no doubt in my mind in his quality of his workmanship.

. Russ and Riley thank you both for the kind words  .

 Joe
my price though would depend on whats being done .
Jim sells quality and as such a basic build   wont be more then 2 or 3 hundred finished in basic form .
But from there   it can go up . There is a lot to think about .
Will this be a Box’ed piece and thus  all the  loading parts made  plus the box .  will there be engraving , wire inlay , case hardening ………
So  realize that when looking at such  pieces , be they pistols or  rifles , don’t forget to add in the actual cost of the build
What im getting at is don’t get stuck on  the price of the assembly  unless you plan on doing your own work .
Set yourself a budget  before you buy . Then start looking at the completed cost for what you want

Captchee,
That is a lot to consider, I have been looking at the Perdesoli flintlock pistol kit as well. What is your opinion on the pistol? I like the fact that it has a longer barrel, which in turn could be better accuracy.

When it comes to Pedersoli , frankly  I have mixed feelings .
Now other others here may feel differently but  I have seen Pedersoli product over the last 10 years  that frankly were just junk .
Now that being said , I also have seen pieces that were very good  or at least parts that were good .
Case in point . I  had a Pedersoli  Kentucky flintlock pistol in my parts  pile . The lock would not spark . It had a trigger pull from hell  and the walnut stock was of very poor quality .
A few years back a lot of the events I shoot at  started including pistol scores as part of their aggregate scoring .  So I took that pistol , converted the lock to a cap lock , put a CVA trigger in it , cut the stock down  and used the barrel .
I actually shoot that   better then any pistol I have .
Now , how does the Pedersoli compare to a chambers . Frankly it doesn’t . there isn’t any comparison. Its kind of like comparing a CVA to a Pedersoli

With chambers your getting a very good grade stock   . A top of the line barrel , trigger and a lock that’s  far better then a Pedersoli  in just about every way . Yes it costs more ,
But as I said , quality wise its better in every way .

With that being said , I would have to ask what it is your wanting the pistol for .
Will you be target shooting  or will it be just an accessional shooter .
Barrel wise 10-14 inchs will give great accuracy . Case in point , do a google for LePage pistols . Take a look at the originals and their barrel lengths.
They also are very expensive pistols to build   or by . Pedersoli sells one  that is of quality. But its also 900-1000.00

If however you just looking for a now and then shooter , the Pedersoli may be for you .
I would consider it before say a Traditions Kentucky  but frankly not by much

Captchee,
I would use the pistol as a shooter, but mostly to hunt some hogs down in south Texas when I go back home. It was just something I though would be interesting.

well then the Pedersoli may work for you .
IMO though , you would probably have better luck with that Pedersoli model  in a cap lock .
