Wooden Slat Back Chair
« on: October 31, 2014, 07:41:00 PM »
Might anyone have any info on camp chairs, if there was such a thing, used in the 1770's?  I recently purchased the one sold by Panther Primitives, but I'm being told that it is not even close to historically accurate.  Any thoughts while I can still return it?

"Camp chairs" for folks in the 1770s would have been large rocks, logs and the ground (maybe with a couple hides under you.

The slat chairs many folks use today are a 1970s re-enactorism.

There were chairs, but mainly for military officers. I'll see what I can dig up for you.

My other thought, well advice, is research before you buy. Saves a lot of money in the end.  :bl th up

Volume 1 of "The Packet" by Mark Tully has info on camp furniture starting on page 36. It also has a diagram of what is believed to be one of Gen. Washington's camp stools for a DIY project.
