Question for Powderhorn Builders
« on: July 17, 2016, 01:26:27 PM »
What do you powderhorn builders use to put a shiney finish on your horns? Do you just use oooo steel wool and leave it at that?

Please don't wax a surface smoothed only with 0000 steel wool, as there are still minute scratches on the material, not readily visible to the naked eye - for the best results, the horn should be polished after the steel-wool treatment.

I use the EASY button,  polishing with a polishing compound on a felt wheel mounted on the shaft of a bench-mounted electric motor mounted -  but I suppose the polishing can be done manually with an automotive rubbing/polishing compound & elbow grease.

i see no issue with going direct to johnson's paste wax right after buffing the horn out with 4/0 steel wool.  that will produce a dull satin finished look as opposed to a gloss shine, and that's good enuf for me in terms of both looks and protective finish.
