It sure could.
The Hawken Bros. did make a few of that design.  Like Rondo said, "I haven't seen many of these."  Because there weren't many made.
Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I think it looks pretty cool, myself.

An interesting piece for sure. Any idea or guess what time period this rifle may have been made?

Judging from the protrusion on the rifle's tang, which looks like it might be the base for a peep sight,... I'm guessing some wheres around the 1860's (but I could be entirely wrong, as such a sight could easily have been added years after the rifle was made).

My thoughts were/are along that same time period as well. I also had the same thoughts about that protrusion on the tang - perhaps a peep sight. Not sure what other purpose it would serve?

Almost looks like some English influence in the stock design. Perhaps ideas picked up from a gentleman sportsman passing through town?

I understand, but it doesn't look like a Hawken and I love how a Hawken looks.

In John Baird's book on the Hawken Rifle, there is a photo of this rifle or one similar to it.  I think it gives a date reference as well.  But darn it, I just can't seem to find it right off.  I thought I knew where it was, but...

The grip is similar to an early 1900's era smokeless shotgun grip.  I know cuz I got one.
