This is a GREAT question Lonewolf!
It will be very interest to see how or others think one powder is better than another.
A few years back I was going to do my dead level best to see if I could prove Swiss was better than Goex.........
Personally, at one poing, I think I did "prefer" Swiss 2F, but right now I only have 2 cans of Swiss left, and over 20 cans of Goex, all grades, including 1F, and Cannon. But I don't feel handicapped by that in anyway.
After testing literally hundreds of loads, in several different muzzleloaders here is what I decided back then.
I suspect I decided Swiss performed a wee bit better a couple of years back, when I had 5# of it to play with and I was trying to decide if performed any better than Goex...during those shooting sessions back then I somehow had this feeling that Swiss may have had a slight edge on Goex, in a couple of the tests.
I distinctly thinking at the time that the Swiss was likely better. But I had very little documentation to prove that...and now as time as gone by, and I have a long time to reflect on what really happen, it would be hard for me to say.
A couple of points I still remember well.
1. Swiss gave the best / smallest shot deviation across the Chronograph on many occasions in different guns of different calibers, anytime I can get an honest SD of 12 I know my loading procedure is good ...but, is that significant in the evaulation??
2. Swiss invariable gave a few feet extra velocity, and by "a few" I mean a very few like 15 sometimes 20FPS....but, is that significant???
Goex may have won out in accuracy, but I would have had to spit some very fine hairs to make this become a fact, in fact, they are so close in accuracy it would be a very tough decision to make.....I know this is significant!.
This is my observation, my alone, and others, with their rifle, and loading differences may see something else, something entirely different.
One thing is for sure, neither Swiss, or Goex have any fleas on either one of them.
To say which was best, one needs to be much more astute than mysef, and / or perhaps have some results that are much more convincing that what I had to work with.
Before Chronographing these two powders, I somehow felt that Swiss would be much faster using the same weight by volume, but that was not the case at all.
FWIW; Uncle Russ...
