A new Hunting Frock

A lady from Pocatello Idaho custom made this frock for me, it is made from 14oz Hemp. I got a chance to try it out last weekend on a squirrel hunt. The weather was an accommodating cool/cold. The frock preformed wonderfully.

i bought a frock from one blanket trading last year, and just checked and now they're no longer in bizness.  too bad, their frocks, shirts and sashes were top notch and fair priced.

They comes and they goes, that's for sure.  Some of them I really hate to see go, and I wonder what happened.  No doubt, a big part of the answer is that life happened.
Nice color on the frock.  Walnut?

john - yes, sad to see that site drop off the map, good folks and great products and prices.  i think i used a dark brown fabric dye, though it's got a kinda purple hue to it in the image, it looks more brown/walnut in person.  i just used it this past sunday at a woods walk, worked out fine (however my shooting didn't!).

That Frock of yours look very similar to mine Rob.

I got mine from downtown Juarez Mexico many moons ago, and I also dyed mine brown with Ritz Dye.

At first it was way, way too dark...looked like crap!
Everybody said, "Man! You must've got that over in Juarez!"
But because I dyed it without first pulling the fringe, I was dead-set determined that I was never going through that mess again, so I just wore it in the El Paso sun for awhile before washing...then after that, pulling that fringe was nowhere near as bad as it was the first time around....live'n learn, they say.

My advise to anyone getting a new frock with fringe, pull the fringe before you do anything else, if that hasn't already been done for you.

"Fringe" is the fancy stuff ("Fluff")coming off the sleeves and shoulders.
If that is not "pulled" or brushed out, that "Fluff" becomes a mat, tied in knots, and is ugly as sin...ruins the looks of a otherwise good looking frock.

Mine was so bad after washing without pulling, I had to use a fork, a strong eating type fork, to break the knots out.
The length of the fringe on that particular frock is about 1.5"

My newer frock, from six plus years ago, has 3" fringe and they were all pulled and twisted at the store "Four Winds" where I got them from in Gallup, New Mexico.

This is my "new" frock, where the fringe had been pulled and twisted to put some kind of order in the fringe....otherwise they would look like a 'valance' on a curtain.


This is my much older frock, from sometime in the late 1980's or mid 1990's. with a bone pipe choker, and a shooting bag, if you can see 'em that well...? ( I Just grabbed 'em off the rack in the garage to take this picture.)


Ask Joe, and Rhondo about "Pullin Fringe", they may explain it better than myself.

ah so, i get it now, thanx russ.  the fringe on my frock is minimal in length and none of it is clumped up, thankfully.

Those are some nice looking frock's you'all have there. 

This is the only known picture of me in my frock that I can find. I never dyed mine, but who knows - I just might?

  I just noticed that picture I posted of that old "Juarez Frock"....it looks "PINK" in the picture...lol

Actually it is dirty brown, Ritz dyed, worth even less what than I paid for it at the time, bought in Juarez, Mexico and likely included two packs of Lucky Strike Cigarettes in the deal, which is how they roll south of the boarder.

Truth is, I was pretty proud of that little purchase back then.
The material seemed okay, a bit heavy maybe, but we couldn't understand each other well enough for me determine just what the material really is.

However, FWIW; What made me like it more, and the part I still clearly remember clear as day is;  The question & Answer session when returning to the US side of the Border,.... which didn't go that well!

In my "Declaration", along with the Booze, I declared the Frock.
I was told by the Officer to repeat that again, and I said "Frock, a shooting Frock" .....

I was quickly informed by the Officer, you better NOT play games with the Border Patrol, because they do not know how to play.
Something I already knew and understood very well!

We were quickly diverted into the Inspection Lane where we had to get out, open the tool box on the truck, open both doors, and "step behind that line".....
Then, after 20 or 30 minutes, we gathered up all our belongings that we had once had on us, and I had the opportunity to explain exactly what a "Frock" was.
The Officer then said, "then why in the Hell didn't you guys just say what you had bought in Mexico, and you wouldn't have had to go through this"....

  I didn't say a word, not one single word, and I dared my buddy to speak. There was just no way I was going through that again.

Soo, my advise, should you ever buy a Frock on the other side of the Border...just say, "and one item of clothing, Sir".....
Don't use the word "Frock"....apparently, to them, it means something that upsets those good folks.

Rob, One Blanket trader is still in bizz, they closed their web site and are now selling on ebay, they just shipped to me yesterday a new pull over frock and osnaburg shirt and as you said their prices are very reasonable!
