Priming Antler No. 2
« on: April 16, 2019, 03:00:20 PM »
Well it took me 3 days to make this deer antler primer. It'll hold 100 grains of 4f powder and is basically the same size as the last one I made - but this one is more user friendly with the way the spout angles down into the pan.

The base plug is a 1/2" x 1/2" birch that is set in tight with bees wax and pinned with tooth picks. The spout has a brass collar on the inside that runs about 3/4" into the opening.

The opening (like the last one I made) is big enough to throw 3fg & 2fg powder. I've got some more to make as I want each of my flintlocks to have their own bag, powder horn, and priming horn or antler. I'm getting there.  :shake

Nice work Joe! I need more primers and like your idea of a primer for each bag for each rifle. I've never built an antler primer. Did you burn out the cavity or drill or a combination?

Nice job! See your excellent work  makes me want to attempt to make one. My skill level, however, starts at pathetic and trends downward...lol

Thanks Ridjrunr, I drilled it out, (came in from two directions with different size bits) then I used a series of round files, sand paper on a dowel, and steel wool... I did see a youtube video of a guy burning out an antler powder measure, which I'd like to try that myself. You know, he made it look pretty easy making that antler powder measure.  :shake

Thanks Oldetexian, if I can do it I'd lay odd's that anyone can do it.  :shake It's enjoyable just tinkering around with the little stuff at times. I always figure we're all on an on going learning curve. Sure, we may not always use the same methods as our ancestors, but we git'er done.  :bl th up

Thank you PetahW,  :shake

I've got a new flintlock in the works that will get this newest one. 'Course, my speed of building anything anymore has slowed way down, so it probably won't see any priming action until fall...  :bl th up

Geez, Joe.  Let a guy retire and see what happens.  He starts making all kinds of stuff.  Good on ya.
That's cute.
Personally, I really do not like making stuff out of antler.  Between little primers like that, range rod handles, short starters, powder measures, buttons, powder flasks and other stuff, I have done my share.  Congrats, Joe, you get to take on where I left off.  Enjoy!!!!!

Well John it's kinda like getting around to doing all those things you've wanted to do - but with work and raising a family - you just didn't have the time to get to a'lot of it.

One thing I could of done without this morning was shoveling snow off my sidewalk. May 1st and shoveling snow - not quite what I had in mind for the 1st of May...lol... At least it wasn't much - couple inches maybe, mostly slush under the snow cap.

That ol' warmer weather and sunshine better last through November and a bit beyond this year to make up for the good weather we normally start getting about mid March.

We're spending the week down here in the Texas Hill Country, and my bride has been saying she thinks this would be a fair place to put up a lodge. No snow is one of her talking points...she has also mentioned the plethora of dance halls and the barbecue several times...lol

Thank you Darren  :shake

I got a .45 caliber full stock curly maple flintlock in the works right now, and I'm thinking that's the home that priming antler is going to have.  :hairy
