Thanks everyone for the ideas and suggestions. Here is what I did. Rawhide liner, Elk hide, and Western diamond back rattle snake.

To make the rawhide liner I traced the blade onto a paint stir stick and cut it out. Soaked a dog chew in a bucket of water, formed it around the stick, then cut it down the center on the "back side". That way it didn't need a welt. I used a baseball stitch to attach the elk hide cover. I used a medium weight piece of veg tanned leather at the top and formed that for a snug fit around the bolster and up the handle. That was covered with the snake skin. The fit is snug and the blade will not fall out.
