Knife sheath?

I recently won the aggregate competition at a rendezvous (thanks to all the practice I got in our postal matches) and was presented with this hand forged knife.

  I usually make a pouch style sheath or a tacked sheath.  I think this one deserves something special.  I'm thinking perhaps a center seam with a horn or wood insert? 

You guys have any suggestions?

I think the rawhide constructed sheaths are very nice. I too need to make a sheath and thats the material I plan on using. I have a dvd of how and he uses rawhide and brain tan if I remember correctly.

Steve, I ve seen it both ways but also just rawhide with a bt decorative flap n fringe. I think theres a bunch of utube vids if im not mistaken.

If you go to the photo gallery you'll see a rawhide (covered with brain tan), sheath I made for my scalper about 30 years ago.
I left it unstained, as I figured original knife sheaths made from these materials weren't stained with leather dye either. 

Stained, or left unstained,.... rawhide and brain tan are great materials for making HC knife sheaths and other accoutrements. IMO

I just recently finished up this rawhide wrapped knife sheath.
The rawhide is from a whitetail deer, and linen thread was used for the stitching.
10 oz. veg tanned leather was used for the gusseted insert.


Knife has a 8" blade and is  12 1/2" overall,... and made from 1095.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and suggestions.  Here is what I did.  Rawhide liner, Elk hide, and Western diamond back rattle snake.

To make the rawhide liner I traced the blade onto a paint stir stick and cut it out.  Soaked a dog chew in a bucket of water, formed it around the stick, then cut it down the center on the "back side".  That way it didn't need a welt.  I used a baseball stitch to attach the elk hide cover.  I used a medium weight piece of veg tanned leather at the top and formed that for a snug fit around the bolster and up the handle.  That was covered with the snake skin.  The fit is snug and the blade will not fall out.

Good job on the sheath, it turned out great. 

I too,... use paint sticks a lot when making knife sheaths.

Thanks - I never thought to use a paint stick for sheath making, using the oiled/greased blade instead.
