At Beaverman's suggestion--- a crude flint wallet
« on: July 31, 2020, 03:54:51 PM »
I'd stepped on Beaverman's toes posting from new topics without realizing it was on the trade blanket but he graciously suggested my Crude attempt might give others ideas so here goes (2nd try lost the first attempt...

I make my stuff as if it were cobbed out on a tree stump in the woods (actually my kitchen table mostly)

Back in 2017 I made a 3 banger wallet but making lines on paper to check size, then transferring to some leather I had (don't even know what oz it is as it's just what I had around...

After being satisfied it was properly sized I lined the INSIDE of the leather to match

I used a coin or washer to make a U shape to extract the flints from their individual "Pockets"

Then I wet that leather & stretched the pockets with a small cold chisel I had to make extraction easier...

While Beaverman is an artist, I just cob crap up to work...my only tool is a 3 pronged TANDY punch and use a needle to sew up the artificial sinew

That's pretty much it... I left an open top pocket at the bottom on my 2nd try in 2019 for leather's for each flint.

I don't have any fancy snaps, button etc and just wrap some leather lacing around it and tuck it in my poke

This is the one I errantly posted on his TRADE BLANKET Post that holds 4 flint and leathers

:wave  Now look what you've done; I'm thinking I need to go through my scrap leather and make one of those!   :laffing

Is there anything holding it closed after you fold it over, or does it stay closed by itself when in your shooting bag?  Right now my flints are in a small pouch which works, but these wallets (yours and Beaverman's) look like they will protect them more.

Sorry hawk... :)

I have a leather boot lace Wrappped around the poke... I used my belt hole punch and put 2 holes in the back and ran the lace thru then wrap it around the folded up the poke and tie it shut by jacing under itself...then stick it all in my bag... made a small poke like that for my jags and patch worm & ball puller hasn't come undone in my bag yet

1st attempt on the left is the 3 flint wallet and the longer one (right) is the 4  flint unit and I made a separate overlay of heavier material I had around for the flint holder part and just folded up the bottom part to make the open top pouch for cock jaw leathers for the bottom... punched holes with the Tandy Tool and then laced in the Artificial sinew

here's a pic of another chap's flint walet and took poke

And one other that led me on my path after study...

Yep, keep it simple works just fine, nothing wrong with home made gear whatever your skill level is, something to be proud of made by your own hand! especially if you have the supplies you need lying around, all of my wallets are made from leftovers of cutting out bags from full 1/2 hides, when you get down to the pieces that you can no longer use for bag panels, make something else and get the most $ for the bucks you spent on the leather! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TRY! so get with it boys and get busy! stitch it up when you sitting in your recliner after dinner watching the boob tube, what else you gonna do? take a pre bedtime nap?!! :luff: :luff: :luff: :toast
