Getting closer
« on: November 04, 2020, 03:31:38 PM »
Raining here today so took a ride up to buffalo arms
Picked up some more round balls, some balistol and most importantly. 5# 2f blackpowder.
Then swung by the craft store and picked up .015 ticking and a pound of beeswax.
 Man I'm lovin in this.
 I'll keep ya posted

funny you should ask, no i didn't.  I should have, I'd like to make one sooner and I mean sooner than later.
I have a zuoave style brass flask which came with the gun but I  noticed tonight the seam near the bottom has separated. 2" long or so.
is there any hope to resolder it, I have no idea how.  guess a horn along with a loading board are in my immediate future.

Funny you should mention powder horns.  In either CdA or Post Falls is a fellow named John Nelson.  He makes a pretty good powder horn, assuming he has any cow horns in his supplies.  I do not have his contact info, but it might be fairly easy to find.  If John is not able to help you with that, I would then get in touch with Gerry at Powder Horns and More.  You can google that.  I know he can fill your order PDQ.  He can also provide you a nice cow horn or two for when you make your own.  He would be my go to guy for this.
Hope this helps.

Well, heck, I suppose that I have found a few more very nice medium size horns myself.  From pure white to mostly white.  Not much else not white.  Sorry, I forgot all about those few.  Might even be a few medium to large size horns.

FWIW...I would have NO CLUE how to go about SAFELY soldering a BP flask that needed it...

That'd be like soldering a leak in a gas tank IMO..

thanks Doc.
I've been pondering it for a few days now,  even though' its empty i still get a pucker when I think about doing anything to it soooo.. it will become a wall ornament.
maybe hanging it on the Christmas tree this year.

 :hairy

I was thinking about fixing the flask last night and it occurred to me that possibly filling it with sand then using a soldering iron (not a torch) and using a low temp solder could possibly work.  Or not.  Or, this is not terribly PC, but the thought of filling the opening with epoxy could also produce some favorable results.  Or you could melt some beeswax into it as well.  Or ???????  Or, you could make a Christmas Tree ornament out of it and be done with it.

I also thought about this, and figured that it could be thoroughly flushed out with water and be safe enough.  If soldered with an iron rather than a flame as John said there would be no danger at all.

You could also use a rawhide wrap on the flask to fix it,.... I'm sure it's been done before.  :)

once the flask is cleaned out with either alky or water, then allowed to dry off, it's just metal left and no concerns over a "ka-boom!" occurring.
