Kind of a vague question but there is a local junk store here that has a 1864 Springfield caplock for sale 1200$.
Not sure of the caliber but from what I know it is in fair condition and most likely original.
Just wonder what folks thoughts were on this long gun and if 1200$ is appropriate .

More than likely it's a .58... I wouldn't even venture a guess on the value if it's original (or even replica). How does the bore look, and if it's an original it would be wise to run the ramrod down it and make sure it's not loaded. (Which has been found quite often with the old original Military firearms of that time period).

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to check the Nipple threads as well.  :shake

I'll try and post up some pics later.

Back in the early days when I first started in this muzzleloading thing, like 1960's, I thought the 1863 Springfield was slicker than buttered bread.  The irony is that out of all the dozens of m/l rifles I have owned, I never had one of them.  I have had a Brown Bess, I have had an 1803 Harper's Ferry, I have had an 1842 Springlfield, and I have even had a Trapdoor Springfield.  Oh well, looks like that will be the one that got away.  At some point the desire to have anything military just evaporated.  Well, I might entertain the thought of an M-1 or an M-14, but that would be it.  Oh well, too bad.
Anyway, good on ya, Keith.  Hope you enjoy your new purchase.

Good on you Kevin!  :toast

$200.00 off the asking price and a bullet mold to boot! Look forward to hearing more about this one.

Like Bigsmoke, I too always had a hankering for one of these, but never took the plunge, and no doubt at this stage in life, I probably won't. But I'll enjoy reading about your adventures with it.  :hairy

I'll post pics soon.
I figure these gun of mine are an investment to pass on to my son and grandson .  I have my father's 7mm express model 4 and Rem. wingmaster. 16ga to pass along too.
I really enjoy learning and I kind of ran out of stuff to learn. in traditional archery . started to stagnate.
M/l takes me back in time and I very much enjoy that.
I've been to gettyburgh 5 times so I knew a military firearm was gonna happen sooner or later .
