Well. It worked, sort of. Maybe.
« on: September 26, 2021, 04:18:17 PM »
I wanted to try making patch lube.  I wanted to see what result I'd get with a 50/50 beeswax/coconut oil mix.
I have some scraps of linen with tan and white stripes. I cut the striped linen into 1 1/4 inch wide strips.  I melted the wax and oil together and soaked the strips of linen in the mix.

The cloth came out way too waxy. And with those tan stripes. It looked and felt like pieces of -- raw bacon. I hung it to dry. Then scraped off the excess to reveal the infused linen. I rolled the scrapings into a ball that I can use to lube more cloth.

Smokey, been there tried that, and loved the time spent on my attempt.
I tried strips, and like you, I made something of a mess on my first attempt....50/50 is not right.
Then I heated a 3oz wax, and 6oz. Coconut Oil, (which I thought would be over-kill) dipped my strips in the pan, pulled the strips between two fingers and a thumb to remove most of the excess, and hung it on a clothes line in direct sunlight to dry.
Rolled 'em up and they looked pretty good...they were NOT "runny" as I had expected.
I shot two 3 ft strips that year and it appeared to be a pretty good lube, even on cold mornings.
Smells pretty good when ya heat it, but so far I have found no correlation between smelling great and accuracy.
So, I'll just say Coconut Oil does works pretty good as a lube mix....even tried it on its own, it's okay but nothing sensational.

I never thought about the Coconut Oil, might be something I'll want to play around with. Half the fun of this hobby is playing around with things like this,,, but I'm well known for tinkering...  :laffing  :shake

I never thought about the Coconut Oil,

Keep in mind that I set out to make a warm weather lube, something more oily than greasy. I have used coconut oil to oil my lock and barrel. It doesn't appear to build up or cook into a sticky layer.  The patches hold it nicely when cleaning. I figured I'd try it. Also it's non-toxic and the smell is pleasant. That helps.

Does this mean we get to refer to Ohio Joe as..... "Tinker Bell?"  :luff:

Ooh, that hurts, but I just couldn't control myself!  :Doh!

Let us know what you discover.  I plan to experiment with it too. I'm not even sure using wax is necessary.

Well I need to find out who sells Coconut Oil? I'm pretty much in the middle of nowhere with every direction open to me...  :laffing

Seriously; did you use the virgin coconut oil?

Joe, it would take a very ugly coconut for that, just like virgin olive oil, IMHO.

It's around. Food grade coconut oil. Check your local supermarket. Asian grocery stores may also carry it.

Joe, just don't let your daughter do the shopping for you....this jar is 6 or 8 years old, and I haven't  put much of a dent in it.
78 fl oz is a lifetime for me and you both!

Yes sir, 78 ounces does seem like quite a bit...

Walmart in Chadron claims they have it, so next time over...

I'll write down that 2 parts coconut oil to 1 part bees wax. If I should find I need to thin it, I can always add more coconut oil...

Then again (and the reality of this), do I really need another patch lube 'cause about the only time I use a lube is when I'm hunting? But, winter's anymore seem long - so who knows what I'll tinker with.  Remember friends, tinkering in your workshop keeps you out of the little lady's kitchen - where she keeps her "honey do" list... :laffing
