I swear, this seems like the longest winter ever!!!
« on: January 30, 2023, 07:42:34 PM »
Well to me it does...  :laffing

"Just rambling"

I have so many Range trips I want to do this year (with ML Rifles, that I haven't fired in years), and it just seems like it's taking forever to get out of Winter... Yes, I've become a fair weather shooter...

I know, it's only February (in a few days) - but why Mother Nature has decided to give me a real Winter this time around - I'll never know? Usually I can get out to the Range by early March, but this year is a real Winter that's going to run into April, "dog gone it." (Least it seems that way)

I guess I was getting to comfortable with our previous mild Winters we've been having (before this one), so we were due for a nasty one, and we got it.

No, just cold and snow... Hope the wind doesn't decide to come up, but we're pretty much snow packed right now... Not great driving conditions for sure.

I was heading out the door this morning to go for a walk with our pastor.  Couldn't get into the car because the doors were coated with ice and frozen shut.  So I put the dog in the pickup but the glass was covered with ice.  I couldn't find the scraper for the truck, but also couldn't get the one out of the car.  Ended up going back in the house for a kettle of hot water to pour on the ice to melt it off.  Great trepidation there, not wanting the windshield to crack (had that happen before, long ago).  But, I was able to see to drive and only got to his house 10 minutes late.

I remember 40+ years ago as a new transplant to North Idaho, one day I decided I would take the car to the carwash and clean off all the gunk that had accumulated on the car over the winter so far.  That was a great idea until I tried to open the door.  The darn thing wouldn't open. :Doh!
I knew enough to not try to rip the door open, as the weatherseal would probably stay either with the door or the body of the car.  So, I just gently tried to pull it open then relaxed then gently pull it, etc. ;banghead;  Eventually, the door did open and I was able to get in and drive away.  And here I was, always trying to not let my California show.
Well, it was a learning experience, and I never did that hairbrained thing again.  I was thankful for two things.  One, it was a rather quick cure.  Two, nobody I knew saw my struggles (and stupidity).

Up here in New England it's just the opposite problem.  Over the 6 years or so it's been warming with less snow each and every winter.  Initially our snow started in November and went through March.  Since then winter has come later and later and ended sooner.  But this year "warm" weather kept going into November; for us, unprecedented.  We have had several snowfalls in January and snow last night.  One brought nearly a foot of the white stuff.  But sunny days and/or rain has melted some of it.  So far we've had probably a total of 24+ inches of it.  I don't actually "love" shoveling snow but I also don't like a sudden change in our climate; That does concern me quite a bit.

I shoveled snow this morning!
My Car was frozen solid, but I was able to get in the truck, lock the hubs, and knock the daylights outta the snowbank blocking my driveway.
That F-250 Super Duty is pretty good at things like this!
I don't think I can say here how I really feel about the longest winter I've ever seen here in Washington State...which started in mid October, and refuses to leave.

Russ...

It's the many things we don't do that totally sets us apart.

I guess the best way I could put this year's winter, is; I've seen these cycles many a times here in the northwest part of Nebraska over the last 35+ winters I've lived here, and truth be known - we really don't know what we're going to get until we get it... Truth be known, it's just part of living where I love living.  :shake

PS... I'll complain about the heat come Summer... LOL!!!

Is Bordeaux Creek FTML still active?  Where is the range, or does everyone still shoot in the park south of town?

Here's a link to our Facebook Page, for info;

https://www.facebook.com/BCFTMLA

This year's doings is; July 13th through the 16th... I'll probably head into camp July 10 or 11...

We have our Spring shoot out at the Rendezvous site, and the only other shooting we do is during the Rendezvous... Norm and some of the other's take part in an annual Fall turkey hunt (or they use to at least), but the Rondy doings is where it has always been.

I'd watch their Facebook Page for updates.
