I came across this book reading Readers Digest "Back to basics"

I was looking at water proofing canvas. The picture showed a tent that looked like a Baker but was called a "shanty" tent.

Googling the name in the article "Nessmuk" revealed it to be the pen name of George W. Sears. December 2, 1821 – May 1, 1890.

"He was a sportswriter for Forest and Stream magazine in the 1880s and an early conservationist. His stories, appearing under the pen name, "Nessmuk" popularized self-guided canoe camping tours of the Adirondack lakes in open, lightweight solo canoes and what is today called ultralight camping."
He was a "trekker". He has a book called Woodcraft that describes many of his hikes and trips that, i believe is a must read. Yes he is a few years beyond the fur trade era but i believe he instills the spirit of the times.
