Trekking or "outing" book
« on: June 03, 2012, 04:57:54 AM »
I came across this book reading Readers Digest "Back to basics"

I was looking at water proofing canvas. The picture showed a tent that looked like a Baker but was called a "shanty" tent.

Googling the name in the article "Nessmuk" revealed it to be the pen name of George W. Sears. December 2, 1821 – May 1, 1890.

"He was a sportswriter for Forest and Stream magazine in the 1880s and an early conservationist. His stories, appearing under the pen name, "Nessmuk" popularized self-guided canoe camping tours of the Adirondack lakes in open, lightweight solo canoes and what is today called ultralight camping."

He was a "trekker".  He has a book called Woodcraft that describes many of his hikes and trips that, i believe is a must read. Yes he is a few years beyond the fur trade era but i believe he instills the spirit of the times.

His book is a free ebook that can be read online Here :

Or downloaded for free legally here.

He describes what to take and how to take it and what to do when you get out there.

again a must read..

Think I've seen that book before, but can't remember if I ever printed it out and read it.  If not, I know where I can find it!  Thanks.
Regards, sse

One of my favorite books, which my father gave me some 40 years ago.  A lot of what he advocates would probably be frowned on these days but it is still very enlightening.  And he used a muzzle loader instead of one of those new fangled cartridge rifles to boot!
