Good article, Puffer.  I really enjoyed it.
I remember in the '60's having C Rats when we were deployed on field exercises.  Some of the weren't all that bad.  I don't really recall what all was in them, but the 4 packs of cigarettes enclosed were "interesting".  They were so dry and awful, they could prompt a person to quit smoking if they had to smoke them for very long.
I don't recall ever having the opportunity to sample MRE's.  I hear they are not too bad.  And like the comments after the article mentioned, anything can be made better with Tabasco Sauce.
Bon Appetite.

Interesting article. I wonder if GW's artillery ever used those hardtack biscuits in their cannons.

Well, I didn't think the 'nam era c-rations were all that bad, and I've always felt (this is just me) you have to eat something until something better comes along,,, so's we ate what we ate out in the field. It did make a Mess Tent look inviting when one was set up in the field / and a Mess Hall when you got back to base from the field.  ;)

I seem to remember that the voyageurs' staple food was split peas.  One guy would stay up all night cooking a big pot of them, plus anything else scavenged the day before.  Then the pot would go in the canoe and breakfast was around 9 a.m.  That would do them until they quit for the night and ate the rest of the peas.  Just going off memory here and Puffer can straighten me out if needed!

Hey Joe, I didn't realize there was such a thing as Nam-era rats. The ones I remember were WWII/Korea. They were anywhere from unremarkable to gag a maggot. especially day after day... I agree with John about the cigs. They were so dry you could smoke one in 3 or 4 puffs. I may not be too bright but I never understood MREs (we never got any). You had to carry any water you wanted to use and boy did it get heavy. Sorry for the ramble.

Yeah, Hank, WWII era is what I remember as well.  Not bad, a 20+ year shelf life.

I think the worst thing I had while I was in the Army was the milk they served us in Thailand.  I think it was called recombined or something like that.  I remember when I got home my mom offered me a drink and I told her I had as much whiskey as I ever wanted when I was over there.  But could I have a nice, cold glass of milk, please?  Evidently, it was hard for her to imagine me turning down a high ball.
