Here's my kit, a copper pot, copper cup, folding fry pan and a wooden bowl, canteen (not shown) I can carry all of this in my haversack along dried meat, dried peas, dried corn, flour, coffee or tea and a salt and pepper horn. Besides the fork I have a horn spoon.

So, first question, how do you keep the wooden bowl clean? I realize that may be a dumb question but....

And since I am asking... dried: meat, peas and corn we have the making for a fine stew... What do you do with the flour?

Not stupid at all. I clean the bowl the usual way, with water but prior to heading out I wipe them down with a bit of mineral oil. It keeps water and food from soaking into the wood. As for flour, a tight weave cloth sack works well.

You can use it to thicken the stew, make bisquits, dough, fry bread, etc.

I use a pot scrubber on my cast iron pans and it works great and even the instructions are in English.

Pretty much what's been said. I'm down to a little folding frypan and a couple of tin boilers/cups. One bigger tin pot for heating water to keep stuff--and me--somewhat clean.

I have a small brazier that I use with 2 of these:

These Trangia alcohol stoves are cheap, silent, and reliable. They work in the brazier and are safe  inside the tent. Mostly. Idiot proof fire is not. I can light this thing and have coffee/tea before I roll out. Even take a tiny bit of the morning chill off the inside surroundings. I use two to have one ready to light if the first proves to burn too short. Don't bother trying those various home made soda can alcohol burners you see all over YouTube. For tinkerers, but not worth the bother. Experience talking.

Plain old dirt or sand is natures scouring solvent. It'll cut the grease and then rinses off with plain old creek or lake water...

Livin in the settlements too long makes a body get too accustom ta modern methods.. :roll eyes

[quote="  I haven't even had time to clean everything up for winter storage.

Winter storage?

Winter is the fun time's,no bugs, beatiful wood's,and NO BOILING HOT TEMP'S!!!!

And what Ron said about livin' in the settlements. I use dirt to clean all my eating stuff, then rinse with water. When the wife is with me,she drags the settlements with her,so soap is used and everything tastes like CRAP!!!!!!!

I'm very fortunate that I live in Mich U.P. and am never far from escaping the settlements to fine tune my gear and get used to using them. That's the key to getting your gear together...USE IT!! Even if it's in yer backyard in the middle of the neighborhood, neighbors should be used to seeing "strange" thing's going on in your backyard if yer any kind of skinner!

ain't that the truth Pathfinder! there are all kinds of strange things going on around my house. Hanging the deer off the basketball hoop and watching the school bus go by is a hoot!

Sorry I'm so late to this party but I thought I'd chime in since it's still going on.

I portray mid 18th century F&I on the French side as a milicien.  My basic gear for cooking when out on campaign is as follows: a small tin cup, a 1.5 qt. copper kettle with a lid, a wooden spoon and wooden bowl.  If we need a cutting board or something like that for preparing food we usually use a large piece of bark or, if that's not available, our bowls.  With this small set up we've made some really great meals.

When it comes to cleaning up I tend to use whatever is at hand.  I've scoured my kettle out with pine needles, cones, dried leaves, grasses, etc.  While out I never use soap because I've seen the ill effects it can have on someone if it's not totally out of your pot the next time you go to use it.

That's all for now.  Take care and until next time...Be well.

Kermit,

The only problem with the alcohol stoves, is that many sites do not allow you to use liquid flammables, at least out where I am.  If I was going to use something modern to supplement my cooking, I'd suggest making a wood-gas stove out of two tin cans.

I have made several sizes, and they burn wood, and the construction has a bellows effect, and they are much better than a plain steel-can "Hobo" stove.
